IN OTHER CUBS NEWS...
Mark Prior pitched another gem a few nights ago. After two games (13 innings), he's only been scored on once and not given up a single earned run.
Poor Ryan Dempster, the other Cubs starting pitcher. Baseball is a game of averages: getting a hit for every two times you get out is excellent; losing one game for every two you win often makes you the best team in the league. So when you're the starting pitcher after Mark Prior, Carlos Zambrano, Greg Maddux, and Kerry Wood, well, it's natural for people not to have the highest of expectations. But I've seen two games now where Ryan Dempster has made a start, been scored upon only once, and still ended up with the loss (most recently yesterday afternoon against the Cardinals).
But I say "poor" Ryan Dempster, and given that he still has his groin muscle attached appropriately to the rest of his body, maybe I should save that adjective for Nomar Garciaparra. I saw him go down in the game Zambrano pitched but never guessed that the injury would be so severe. I can't even imagine the pain. I'm not going to try. I certainly don't have any inside information about these things, but to have the groin muscle torn from the bone, that sounds like a season ender to me. I'm quite bummed. I definitely expected Nomar to get hot as the season progressed and to have a positive effect on the rest of the team. I'm sure he's more bummed than I though. I mean to have your groin muscle torn from the bone. Shudder...
Maddux takes the mound in ten.
