WILL SOMEBODY LET ME KNOW WHEN IT'S OK TO START WHINING?
Erik,
I giggled when I read in your latest post that "its early, two weeks into the season is hardly the time to be hollering that the sky is falling..."
I've been reserving some concerns I have about As and Giants' ability to get through this season with, well, with some bloody dignity. I have similar concerns about the Cubs.
You've been with baseball much longer than I have. Is there a good point in the early season when you start to get an accurate reading for how things might fare? I mean, I've seen teams suck in the spring, rebound with pizzazz in the summer, and then burn out in the fall. I've seen DLs make all the difference. I've seen pitchers get better, stronger, faster months after their first start. I've seen promising players such as Ricky Ledee sit like pond water on one team, but fizz like champagne for another.
I have a tendency to review standings a lot. Like, a lot. It's like watching the red line in a thermometer go up and down and up and down. For instance, if I were a fair weathered fan, I'd drop the Cubs like tater tots and run to the White Sox for some feel-good lovin'. If I were the same kind of fan, I'd throw up my arms at the Grandparents -- ooops, I mean the Giants -- and, well, turn to surfing.
That's what I love about our Small Ball gig. It's fun and therapeutic. But at some point, I hope I get the memo that says, "OK, you may start moaning and bitching, now." For starters, I've got a few unflattering things to say about the Giants bullpen and the shadow of doom that they spread over all the lands.
But hey! It's a beautiful day with three games worth checking out. Play ball.
