THE UNDERWOOD

On the one hand, I feel a little silly using my Underwood typewriter to immortalize random baseball blatherings onto cotton bond paper (but not at all silly publishing said blatherings to the world). At the same time, I am highly amused by the high-tech indulgence of streaming baseball from the internet to my computer and then onto the television while I pound away at an old manual typewriter.

The weather has been incredible and the windows are all open. I wonder if the neighbors hear my typing. Certainly the sound of a manual typewriter is easily recognizable if almost never heard. I wonder what they think of these noises coming from the "computer guy's" home (the gossip in this neighborhood is saucy and scandalous, let me tell you). But hey, what else is there to do? I have the urge to write but my laptop is otherwise engaged.

The Cubs have the day off, so I'm watching the Red Sox and Yankees at Fenway. Randy Johnson is pitching for New York, and though he's as good as they come, the Red Sox have managed a pair of two-run homeruns and lead 4 - 1.

But here it is the top of the fourth, Bronson Arroyo pitching, two outs, full count, bases loaded and ... Arroyo walks in a run. 4 - 2. Bases still loaded. Uh-oh, something's going on. The Boston coaches may be arguing balls and strikes. No, that's not it, but one of the coaches (Ron Jackson) is gone. Seems the ump heard him say something he didn't like.

Matsui's turn at the plate and ... he get's a single. Man, I hate it when the team I'm rooting for begins to melt down. The game is tied. Now it's A-Rod and ... another single, another run. 5 - 4, Yankees.

Shit! Shit! Shit!

But it's not the game that has me cussing. I've just realized that pounding away on my Underwood has cut two deep grooves in the coffee table. Never had this happen with a laptop. Jenny is going to kill me. Shit!

The inning is finally over and so is my typing.

The Red Sox managed to come back, tying the game in their next at bat with a Veritek homerun, and then taking the lead and eventual win, with another three runs in the eighth. Final score: 8 - 5, Red Sox.
