THE NATIONALS DEBUT

What an event. The town of my birth gets its own baseball team for the first time in decades. They inherit the Montreal Expos, plant them in the dreaded RFK Stadium for a few years while D.C. builds a new one, and wait.

My dad, who lives in the D.C. area, says local sports writers and broadcasters are apoplectic with expectations, nearly every one of them outrageous or otherwise fantastic. In the age of the talking head, that's no surprise. Dad says, "The Nationals will be lucky to win 50 games." It's rare that you get to watch a franchise built from the ground up. I'll be watching the team closely over the next few seasons.

Today, the Nationals, with their 5-4 record, go into a game with the Diamondbacks in a good spot within their division, holding their own so far against better teams like Atlanta and Florida. The Diamondbacks are doing well, but today, in the home opener, they have to contend with Livan Hernandez, a former Giant, former Marlin, who just checked them confidently in the top of the 1st.

First Nationals hitter to go to bat is Brad Wilkerson. Game time...
