OCTOBER ACTION

Erik,

I guess it's no surprise that my choices for the playoffs mirror yours. I have no love for any of the teams, although I have a lot of respect for St. Louis and Boston.

I'm so intentionally ignorant about the White Sox and their capabilities that I have no idea how they match up against the Red Sox. I'd assume that their stellar League record constitutes a significant threat to the scrappier Red Sox, but what the hell do I know? Only that I hope Boston grinds Chicago underfoot.

[update] Bottom of the 1st, it's White Sox 5, Boston 0. A.J. Pierzynski, the completely not beloved former Giants catcher, just contributed three of those runs with a homer. Boooo![end update]

Nobody in the NL West deserves to even pick up a bat in October, but the rules say somebody's gotta go, and San Diego's it. St. Louis just creamed them good, although the Padres tried to do something in the top of the 9th. I think I heard somewhere that the Cardinals were having some late season blues for some reason. I hope that doesn't make them vulnerable to the dreadful Padres. I'll be very happy when St. Louis finishes them off.

Angels and New York. Isn't that a bit like a presidential election in which both candidates are horrible choices? I can't stand either team, so I'll sit those out.

Atlanta and the Astros. Ugh. Blech. Also unwatchable for me (but for entirely different reasons than LA/NY—these teams just bore me).

So, my eye is on Boston and St. Louis, just as it was last year. One thing that fascinates me is that no path to the World Series is entirely clear.

  • Oof! We're only through six, and the White Sox lead Boston 12 - 2. I was excited about today’s game, with Matt Clement on the mound--I always liked him on the Cubs--but he got chased early and things just keep getting worse.
