GET OUT THE BROOMS

Another nail biter.

For the first five innings, I caught glimpses while commuting from the beach to the bar. During those glimpses, I saw the Cubs lead 1-0, 4-0, 4-3, and 5-3. Jenny and I didn't give the game our undivided attention until the sixth, and so I did not see Koronka's major league debut. From the scores, it seemed pretty solid. The final four innings, however, stretched a lifetime.

In the top of the sixth, Derrek Lee drove in an insurance run but the evil Dodgers answered back, their first batter launching a homerun off the returning Borowski. 6-4.

In the seventh, after twenty-odd consecutive scoreless innings, Wellemeyer looked shaky and loaded the bases. Wuertz came in. He contained the Dodgers to a single run. 6-5.

In the top of the eighth, Derrek Lee came to the plate with runners on second and third. Already 4 for 4, the announcers predicted that he wouldn't get anything worth swinging at. The Dodgers pitcher decided to play the averages instead (surely Lee couldn't go 5 for 5). Derrek Lee, Chicago's superman (yes, I realize that I completely ignore the White Sox as if they didn't exist much less were leading their division), would go 5 for 5. In fact he would hit the seems off the ball and drive in a 3 run homerun. Despite the sedate surroundings of our refined hotel, I let out a great big whoop of cheer. 9-5.

Being a Cubs fan, a four run lead in the eighth is not enough to make me relax. Fortunately today, all was good and the Cubs won their sixth in a row by sweeping the evil Dodgers.
