CALIFORNIA

I've been looking forward to this week since I first combed the Cubs 2005 schedule way back in February. Back home in Austin, it's getting hot. Last week was miserable, sticky, scorching, and amplified by a broken car air conditioner. Here, settling in for a glorious week in San Diego, I've been wishing I'd thought to bring sweat shirts, lots and lots of sweat shirts. I love it. Getting sunburned under cool, breezy air.

The Cubs looked good today against the Dodgers. In February, when I envisioned this trip with such glee, I had no idea that the opposition would be so tough. But here we are, and the Cubs took the first one, giving Maddux his third win of the year and the bullpen hanging tough through three innings of work. Also, Aramis Ramirez is starting to get hot. Once he and Derek Lee are clicking at the same time, this offense will be unstoppable. Add that to the incredible starting pitching of late... Do you hear optimism in my tone? It must be the ocean air, doing funny things to my head.

Tomorrow, Jenny and I drive up to Los Angeles for the game. Go Cubs!

  • Derek Lee is nearly (ok, completely) searing enough to sate my thirst for Barry Bonds. I watched yesterday's game against the Dodgers, which was a hoot, particularly since it's Chicago's fourth consecutive win and it's a win against the evil Dodgers (remember to always type "evil" before the word "Dodgers," or the mojo doesn't work).

Every time I watch Moises Alou do amazing things for the Giants, I'm reminded that if he were still in Chicago's lineup, he, Lee, and Ramirez would do nigh-on devastating things.

Have fun in the sun, SoCal boy. See you soon. ;)
