ZAMBRANO'S KRYPTONITE

Ouch. As of this writing, at the bottom of the 2nd inning, after giving up 8 runs in a single half -- that's right I typed an 8, as in eight -- Carlos Zambrano has been removed from the game. He blew it. Why? Because Milwaukee exposed and made him suffer for his greatest weakness: his inability to start a game with the sort of decisive shutout power he exhibits usually after a couple of casual warmup innings.

Ooops.

This will either demoralize the Cubs or drive them to revenge. It's early, still, so who knows what will happen. I know better than to predict such things.

  • You've definitely hit onto Zambrano's weakness, but since I have always thrilled in his energy and enthusiasm, my take on this shelling is that it will produce a beautiful and finely focused rage that will result in outrageously dominant pitching for the rest of the season. Either that, or he will hit two more triples. Or, run for president.

Am I brilliant, a fool optimist, or have I just jinxed the rest of the Cubs 2005 season? Um ... brilliant of course.
