BRIGHT SHINY TIMES

It's hard to believe how boring baseball was about three weeks ago and how incredibly exciting it's been in the last two. Hell, even the Giants pulled out a dramatic win against the bottom-of-the-barrel Royals, who were about to humiliate San Francisco by sweeping them in their own park (could anything be more demeaning than losing 3 home games in a row to the worst team in baseball?).

I returned from work today to find that the Cubs had clobbered the Red Sox, 14-6. How in the sweet name of bejeezus did that happen? Don't tell me. As soon as the Nationals game against Seattle is over, I'm going to watch Maddux in action. I heard he hit his first home run since 1999. I'd have sold one of my dogs to be at Wrigley Field today.

In great news, the Nationals traded their weakest starting pitcher (Tomo Ohka, who's stronger than any pitcher in the Giants rotation) for the Brewers' Junior Spivey, to fill the 2nd-base hole left by Jose Vidro's injury back in early May. Spivey is an All-Star player who had a terrific run with the Diamondbacks before moving to Milwaukee. His addition to the team gives us even more offensive/defensive depth and breadth. In even better news, Vidro is well enough to practice on the field and is expected to return after the All-Star break. His return -- coupled with Spivey's support -- will make the Nationals righteously dangerous.

In Cubs draft news...of 51 picks, 15 of them were pitchers (18RHP, 7LHP), signaling the seriousness of Chicago's commitment to a future of versatile pitching.

Also, today, in a private ceremony, Nomar received his 2004 World Series ring based on a decision by the Red Sox that if you played even one inning with Boston last year, you get a ring. That's pretty cool. Perhaps it's a bit of nuanced curse-breaking magic that will extend to his new role in the Windy City.
