FIRST GAME OF THE NEW YEAR

I plunked down my $80 and am now streaming my first baseball game of 2006. I didn't have time to go to Phoenix like I did last year, so I'm not feeling quite as connected to or as excited about baseball as I was on March 11, '05. Barry Bonds' absence from most of last season and the large question mark over his head regarding the health of his knees make the 2006 season more like a suspense thriller than a baseball season. At least where the Giants are concerned.

In Viera, Florida, the Nationals are regrouping. A strong first half in 2005 seemingly evaporated in the second half as the team, working through and around injuries, failed to sustain their impressive D.C. debut. I'm going to attend the Nationals/Yankees series when I go home in mid June.

I have no idea what's in store for the Cubs, I never do, no matter how good or bad they look. In fact, as the Cubs move farther and farther from their big moment in 2003, and as the Giants careen away from their dramatic peak in the early naughts, and as the Nationals just try to figure out who they are (and who owns them), I have little faith that any of my teams are going to do anything special.

The great thing about having three home teams, however, is that the opposite of three times the disappointment is three times the joy. That always makes for great baseball.

While that is true, with the teams you picked, you poor soul, I doubt you'll be experiencing any joy anytime soon.

Regarding Bonds, it would seem that these days the handful of people still backing him up are Giants fans. What is your take on the matter? (I know you said you wouldn't make a post about steroids, so how about a comment?

  • Various, you provoker, you.

Yes, my three teams are in thrall to the fullness of a cosmic plan that makes 2006 a season to -- how shall I put this delicately -- Tivo.

Nonetheless, I shall stridently forge ahead in the hopes that San Francisco, Chicago, and D.C. do something. And there's all kinds of faboo baseball to be played regardless of how the favorites are doing.

On Bonds. Bonds is the reason I got sucked into baseball. I have no specific or unassailable devotion to him, but the guy turns up the volume of every baseball fan who watches him. That's exciting. I'll be sorry to see him retire.

I won't pretend to speak for or have insights into some pool of Giants fans. Really, don't we get enough of that non-representative opinion-izing on talk radio?

Nobody I know cares about Bonds scandals. Instead, my peeps, like me, hunger to see the man knock balls into McCovey Cove. Natch.
