WANTED: MAGIC FAIRY DUST

I'm watching the first of today's Cubs/Braves double-header. I already know Mark Prior lost the game, but I want to watch and understand why.

As my father likes to say: "You choose to love the Cubs at your own risk. For every winning streak, there are two or three emotionally devastating losing streaks." I guess this would be one of those.

I'm having difficulty with the math. Compare the Cubs and Nationals. The Nationals have a good starting rotation, with only one superstar pitcher in Livan Hernandez. Their bullpen is rock solid. The Cubbies have a great starting rotation, with four killer pitchers in Prior, Wood, Maddux, and Zambrano. Their bullpen, while not Nationals quality, is pretty good with bodies like Rusch and Dempster. Pound for pound, the Cubbies offense is nothing to sneeze at. Defensively, they're pretty good, though not as consistent as Washington. Seems like it should all even out.

Question: So what's the problem? Answer: I have absolutely no idea.

With Smoltz pitching against Jerome Williams tonight, I have low hopes the Cubs can pull out a win, but I'll watch the damn game, anyway. Why? Because I love the Cubs. At my own risk.
