EXCITING WEEKEND IN SF

Although the Cubs are making me cry and the Giants are leaving me indifferent, the Nationals give me some kind of crazy hope for a fan-gratifying season. They won 2 of their 3 games against the Dodgers (utterly counter to my preposterous prediction), their most important East-West contest to date.

Livan Hernandez (may the Giants rue the day they lost him after 2002) pitched 9 strong innings, despite 7 hits, 2 runs, and 2 errors. I love more than anything watching an efficient pitcher go the whole game (only 131 pitches) and wish we saw more of that, putting an end to the very silly reliever/closer culture that seems to have spoiled the beauty of a starter's glamour.

For a beauty of a play watch Nick Johnson take a roll on his way from 1st to 2nd after Jeffrey Hammonds drives the ball across his path on its way to right field (MLB video @ 2 hours, 11 minutes). Johnson gets back up and keeps on trucking all the way 'round to 3rd. Woohoo! (He eventually creeps home for a run.)

This Friday, San Francisco is rolling out the carpet for the Nationals, the first time -- according to broadcasters -- a D.C. team has played in town in the history of baseball (the Senators never played here? Must check the Encyclopedia on this one...). I'm going to try to get some cheap seats for Friday evening's game and Saturday or Sunday's game.

When two teams I love play each other, I usually don't care who wins. It's just double the fun all the way around. I'll wear the Alou t-shirt I bought in Scottsdale and my Nationals cap. That should drive bipolar fans bananas. Weee!
