SHOCKING DISPLAYS OF FANDOM

At 7:59 PM, PT, I heard my cell phone beep. Since I normally ignore incoming phone calls when I'm doing something important, like eating a burrito or brushing my dogs' teeth, I paid it no mind. Hours later, I decided to listen to the message waiting for me. This is what I heard...
Cubs win! Cubs win!

I had to listen to the message four times before I could decode it. Cell distortion, static, wind, rain -- hell, it could have been a hurricane in the background. But then I realized what was being said and that my buddy Erik was on the other end of the message, calling from Houston after the Cub's squeaked out a suspenseful win, 3-2 over the Astros. Greg Maddux vs. Roger Clemens, like Frank Miller's gritty Batman/Superman showdown in the seminal Dark Knight graphic novel, but without capes and tights.

I suspect my friend is now dancing topless on a slippery bar at the Crooked Ferret, or Bubba's, or Big John's, twirling empty bras over his head. But you didn't hear that from me.

Go Cubs!
