A WEEK OF CRUSHING BLOWS
I couldn't have let the 2005 season go by without using the term "crushing blows." It's so Wagnerian and, well, it's about to happen. In two cities, over the course of two series.
This week, the Giants are in Arizona, where they're no doubt going to have their clocks cleaned. In April, they split a 2-game series, but that was before Arizona ate all their magic beans and leapt to within breathing distance of the unstoppable Dodgers. I have no figures for how well the Giants do out in Arizona, but I don't think it's going to be pretty. Current Giant Schmidt and former Giant Russ Ortiz will duel for the win. That, at least, might make for some good drama. And Alou is fast emerging from his season-starting slump. Can he make a difference against someone like Shawn Green?
Also on the crushing-blows front is the Nationals in LA. I don't think I can bring myself to watch this one (meaning, of course, that this is probably the only game I'll watch today). As much as I'd like to fantasize about the little expansion team that could, let's face it, the Dodgers are white hot. One good thing that might come out of this is that these teams meet for the first time tonight. Here's to the underdog!
Finally, with a day to heal from their heartbreak in Houston, the Cubs will face their peers in the Central division, the Brewers. Let's hope that's more like an even match and that no crushing blows ensue. I can take only so much defeat in seven days.
