I WANNA SEE BLOOD NEXT TIME
Andrew,
I've said it before and I will say it again:
I am not exaggerating when I tell you that I did a double take on the article you linked to and had to check the date. I truly thought I had read your link one year before. Which of course causes me to ask, does an injured Wood even qualify as news any more? I think not. In fact, I'm going to decree that from now until Wood pitches one full season without injuries, a Wood injury (unless actual blood has been shed) does not count as a meaningful news story.
As for Prior, he's got the 2006 season before I write him off. This injury doesn't bode well, but from my viewpoint as a perpetual procrastinator, he's got time.
But let's talk about Zambrano. In fact, let's talk about why nobody talks about Zambrano. In close to a month's worth of Cubs spring training news stories (I counted 77), Zambrano is only mentioned once in the headline or teaser. This occurred March 2nd. Yes I know he's been playing for Venezuela in the World Baseball Classic, but you know if Wood and Prior were pitching for team USA the Cubs' site would have something to say about it every day (probably in relation to an injury).
From my perspective, Zambrano's the one who can propel the team this year. He's motivated, energized and striving for greatness. And if he gets injured, I at least know there will be a good story to go with it: "I legged out a triple but pulled something on the way home." or "That ump made me so mad I just had to punch myself in the nose."

Wood can kiss my ass.

Oy, it's a sign of the world we live in, but I can tell you why the Angry Baby Giant™ doesn't get the kind of news Mark and Kerry get: he's in the shadow of Mark, Kerry, and Greg, warm and wonderful All-American guys, two of them frustrating hopefuls, one of them a legend in the making. Carlos is also difficult to parse into the tall dreamy mid-western ideal of a killer pitcher. He's angry, he looks like he'd mug you in a dark alley. Oooo, scary. Hell, I see more news about Glendon Rusch than I see about the Angry Baby Giant™.
I agree with you 100%. He's the hottest thing happening with the Cubs. Kids apparently love him. I love him and want to have his children. And he's only 24! Hellooooo, media, rock star waiting to be discovered. Bueller? Anybody?

You’re right. They exemplify the look of pitcher/hero archetype to the point that they might have stumbled off of a 1950s movie set and into the Cubs dugout. But weren't those movies often about resilience? Have these boys even heard that word?
