WHAT I'M EXCITED ABOUT

Greg Maddux : There are so many spectacular angles to Maddux's success this season. As I write, he's about to receive his 5th tick mark in the win column, making him the winningest pitcher so far in the major leagues. 5-0. That looks good on paper and sounds great when you say it. His ERA yesterday was 0.99, which is a clinical, statistical way of saying, "I'm not making too many mistakes...bitches."

Another angle that makes his success feel so good is that he is almost singlehandedly making up for the loss of Wood and Prior. Mad Dog's on his way out of the game, while Wood and Prior are (were) supposed to be tomorrow's pitching superstars. Ah, fate.

Alfonso Soriano : OK, so there was some controversy related to the Nationals signing this 2nd baseman. To get him they had to give up some of their stellar pitching and one of the most well-liked players -- my fave -- Brad Wilkerson. The team wanted to play him in the outfield, but he's not an outfielder -- he's not even a great 2nd baseman. He didn't want to play the outfield. Frank Robinson was uninterested in what Soriano wanted, so now he's in left field. The question, then, is why Alfonso Soriano? He's power. With a .323 BA, 7 HR, and 13 RBIs, he's insurance should Vidro, Johnson, or Guillen get wounded or enter into a slump.

At .318, the Nationals are stinking up the place, but with Soriano and a healthy middle of the lineup and more potent pitching, they stand a chance of perhaps winning more games than they lose. A lot will depend on what goes down with the Mets, Braves, and Phillies.

Barry Bonds : While watching today's Cubs game, I heard that MLB does not plan any special recognition when Bonds surpasses Babe Ruth, which he's 4 homeruns from doing. I can't say I'm terribly surprised. MLB is busy investigating stuff that happened a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away. Why should they be interested in an extremely rare and exciting event such as this?

My only hope is that he doesn't break the record this weekend, because I'm going to be out of town, miles from a radio, computer, or TV. It would be awfully inconsiderate of Barry (or "bearrrEEEEEEE" as we like to call him from the Bonds Squad bleachers) to leave me out of the fun.

Fantasy Performers : Props to my Fantasy league peeps, who are keeping me occupied and excited when my real teams let me down. Bronson Arroyo, Andrew Jones, Francisco Rodriguez, Eric Chavez, Jimmy Rollins, Brad Hawpe, Ryan Langerhans, Cliff Lee, Paul Konerko, Johan Santana, and the always entertaining Manny Ramirez are giving me glimpses into games and teams to which I'd otherwise pay little or no attention.
