WELCOME BACK, JEFF

You might remember that I gushed last season about Atlanta's Jeff Francoeur like a little girl stricken with puppy love. I watched his debut game against the Cubs, where he hit a colossal 3-run homer while his family watched from the stands, and actually understood how good that must have felt.

Jeff, like Giant Matt Cain and Astro Chris Burke, is plain fun to watch. Today, he hit two home runs after a dejecting 35-at-bat funk (just two hits!). Before today, the hysterical press had been comparing Francoeur to Joe Charboneau, a once-and-famous rookie (1980) who sucked in his 2nd season and left the game in his third. Wow, aren't we obsessed with failure?

Baseball is about successes. It's about triumphs and baby steps toward the next great record. It's about those too-short years when a talented young athlete can fall on the scene, make a splash (or not), and then look back at the tender age of 45 and say, "Boy, I had fun."

I wish Jeff all the best. He won't ever make me a Braves fan, but he deepens my love for the game.

  • Francouer doesn't walk much, but he does just about everything else well. Being a Brave, though, and likely to become a good player, he just deepens my hatred of the Braves.

    WHOOOOooooooOOOOooooooo...

    OOOOOoooooOOOOooooooo

Stupidest chant in history -- and yes, I hate the Florida St. Seminoles, too, who do that same damned chant.

Oh, sorry. Went off on a tangent there.
